The project
A landmark corner in the town centre
The George Hotel stands on a busy corner in Reading town centre, with shops and restaurants at street level and the hotel above. The scaffold was put up for external painting, which meant giving the painters safe access to every floor of the building while the street below carried on as normal.
How it was scaffolded
The scaffold wraps both street elevations and the curved corner between them, rising the full height of the building to the roofline. Lattice beams at first-floor level carry the scaffold over the shopfronts, so the entrances stay clear and pedestrians can walk underneath, and the uprights at street level are fitted with high-visibility protection. Blue debris netting encloses every lift above, keeping paint, dust and materials inside the scaffold and away from the public below.
