Planned before it is built
The paperwork behind a safe scaffold
A safe scaffold starts on paper. Before anything is erected, the scaffold has to be specified, either to a standard TG20:21 arrangement with a compliance sheet, or with a bespoke design where the structure falls outside the guidance. The work itself needs a method statement and risk assessment, so everyone on site knows how the scaffold will be erected, used and dismantled. We prepare this documentation for our scaffolds and issue it before work starts, so your principal contractor, insurer or client has what they need.
TG20:21 compliance sheets
For scaffolds built to the standard arrangements in the industry guidance.
Bespoke designs
For temporary roofs, cantilevers and other structures outside the guidance.
Method statements
How the scaffold will be erected, altered and dismantled safely.
Risk assessments
The hazards identified for the job and how each one is controlled.
When a design is needed
Structures that usually need a bespoke design
Most everyday scaffolds are covered by TG20:21. The structures below are the ones that usually need a design of their own.
Temporary roofs
Designed for the span and the wind loads the roof must resist.

FAQs
Scaffold design & rams questions
Straight answers to the things people ask before booking scaffolding. Anything else, just call 0800 2086 905 or 07831 197615.
Ask a questionWhat is TG20:21?
TG20:21 is the National Access and Scaffolding Confederation’s technical guidance for tube and fitting scaffolding. Scaffolds built to one of its standard arrangements are covered by a compliance sheet; anything outside it needs a bespoke design.
What does RAMS mean?
RAMS stands for risk assessments and method statements: the documents that set out the hazards of a job, how they are controlled, and the safe sequence of work.
Does every scaffold need a design?
No. Scaffolds that fit a standard TG20:21 arrangement are covered by a compliance sheet instead. We will tell you at the survey which applies to yours.
When do I receive the documents?
Before work starts. If your principal contractor or client needs them earlier, for pre-qualification or planning, tell us when you enquire.
Can you supply documents for tenders?
Yes. As well as RAMS, we can supply insurance certificates and our CHAS, Constructionline Gold and SSIP accreditations.
